Professor Helene Marsh from James Cook University is among 200 delegates attending a reef conference this week in Cairns in far north Queensland.

She is calling for stronger action to protect the reef.

We all know that the floods of 2011 were a huge event, but it seems the effects are still being felt off the coast.

Yesterday at the Fitzroy Basin Authority's annual muster the assembled crowd heard about the research that was conducted following last year's flooding and what effect that had on the coastal and reef ecosystem.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef and stretches over 3000 kilometers along the Queensland coast. Now, scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science found that over half of its coral has disappeared over the past 27 years.
